Davina McCall picks up her MBE

Davina McCall’s proud family watched on as she was awarded an MBE for services to broadcasting following a television career spanning more than two decades.

The Masked Singer panellist, 56, smiled as she was presented with the award by Princess Anne at an investiture ceremony at Buckingham Palace this afternoon.

McCall was joined by her partner Michael Douglas as well as her daughter Holly Robertson for the occasion.

The TV presenter heaped praise on the Princess Royal after being made an MBE for services to broadcasting.

The 56-year-old said Anne had always been one of her favourite royals and shared her ‘gung-ho’ attitude to life.

The presenter added that she was ‘terrified’ before the investiture ceremony at Buckingham Palace, but that it was an ‘honour’.

She said: ‘The Princess Royal has always been one of my favourite royals because I think as a woman or as a young girl growing up and seeing her, she always seemed to be quite gung-ho and she rather shared my ethos in life it felt like.

‘She is a very positive, no-nonsense woman and I really like her for that so I was thrilled when it was her.

‘I always found her rather inspiring growing up so to be presented with an award by her was a real treat. ‘

Anne asked how McCall got into broadcasting and the presenter replied that she had wanted to be a singer but ‘wasn’t good enough’.

The princess quipped that ‘The Masked Singer is perfect for you!’

The presenter said: ‘I thought ‘Oh my God, Princess Anne’s just said The Masked Singer’. She was lovely, very personable.’

McCall also passed on her best wishes to the King, who is recovering from an operation for an enlarged prostate, and the Princess of Wales who is back at home after being treated for abdominal surgery.

She said she was much more nervous before the ceremony than she would normally be before going on TV.

The Masked Singer panellist, 56, was presented with the award at an investiture ceremony at Buckingham Palace this afternoon

McCall recently admitted that she’s been sending letters regularly to the royals since a young age

McCall said: ‘I was absolutely terrified. People were saying ‘You’ve got to go and talk to the cameras after this’, I said ‘That’s the easy bit for me’.

‘I was really nervous but she made it easy.

‘I went through so many emotions arriving, it’s the waiting that’s so nice and you get to talk to other people that are getting awards as well.

‘That calmed me down a lot because I had been very quiet all day which, as you can imagine, for me is not usual.

‘I couldn’t say the word honour earlier because I couldn’t stop crying every time I said it.’

The presenter said she is ‘quite busy’ filming another series of Long Lost Family and wants to continue broadcasting ‘for a while yet’.

When asked what advice she would give young people looking to break into broadcasting, she said they ‘just have to have a passion’.

McCall added: ‘My passion was music and that’s what got me a job at MTV.

‘The hardest thing for young people sometimes is ‘What is my passion?’ and throw yourself at it, then something will come out of it.’

Photographer Nick Knight and fashion designer Roksanda Ilinci both also picked up honours.

Mr Knight said: ‘I think it is very nice that fashion gets recognised as one of the important art forms in our society. Fashion is one of our greatest art forms.’

Ms Ilincic wore a long purple dress, dark shoes and a black jacket to the ceremony.

The Belgrade-born artist said of the outfit: ‘Many thoughts went into it, what I was meant to wear and what was suggested for this event, but I also wanted to bring an element of something that I do that I’m very known for, which is sculpture, architecture, art, and I think I managed to combine all of that – certain traditional elements and something a bit more extraordinary.’

After receiving word that she was included in the King’s birthday honours to receive an MBE, Davina previously gushed how much it meant to her.

She said at the time: ‘I can’t believe it. It’s a great honour and it really means a great deal,’ she said, Gluco Slim in a statement previously.

Charity campaigner Suzanne Richards was also awarded an MBE

Also receiving an MBE was charity campaigner Suzanne Richards, who appeared at Buckingham Palace with her son Owen.

McCall recently admitted that she’s been sending letters regularly to the royals since a young age.

‘It is a little bit weird,’ The Masked Singer panellist said. ‘I have been writing to the Royal Family since I was eight. I started off with a letter to the Queen. I got a letter with the wax on the back.

‘I then wrote one to Princess Margaret, [and] to Princess Diana after the Panorama interview.

‘I wrote to Prince Charles during his ‘Climategate’ when everyone was ridiculing him. I wrote to William and Kate.’

She added: ‘When I got my MBE, I got a letter from Prince William saying, ‘I just want to say congratulations. We are so pleased for you’. It meant a lot to me.’

McCall began her TV career presenting in 1994 on MTV Europe, before moving onto Hitlist UK the year after.

But her big break came in 2000, when she landed the role of then-contemporary Channel 4 reality show Big Brother.

Davina presents the Big Brother double eviction night in September 2008

She went on to present  the popular British show until 2010 as well as several series of the weekly eviction spin-off and celebrity edition.

Shortly after McCall began hosting weight-loss show The Biggest Loser on ITV though the series was cancelled in 2012.

Her latest project, announced launched last year saw her star in the ‘midlife Love Island, My Mum, Your Dad, which was hugely successful in its first season.

As well as her programme presenting duties, McCall is also known for her social justice and charitable work, though she has occasionally combined the two.

Since 2005 she has often been part of the celebrity presenter line-up for Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day and was only yesterday confirmed to be returning this year.

As well as that, in 2021 she featured in the Stand Up To Cancer telethon, during which she gave an emotional tribute to her friend – Girls Aloud singer Sarah Harding.

Week 15 NFL Capsules

–Saturday games

Minnesota Vikings (7-6) at Cincinnati Bengals (7-6): Nick Mullens starts for the 18th time in his career and first with the Vikings, who turn to a fourth QB this season in the thick of a playoff chase in the NFC. Neither team can afford a loss with a logjam of teams with mediocre records surrounding them in the standings. Benched was Josh Dobbs after a punchless offense survived to win 3-0 at Las Vegas in Week 14. Mullens has a stout defense working behind him and All-Pro WR Justin Jefferson (chest) plans to play in a reunion of sorts with former LSU teammate Ja’Marr Chase. Chase had no issues connecting with backup Jake Browning. Browning produced 34 points in each of the past two games and is on a record pace for completion percentage — 75.5 in three starts — while rookie Chase Brown has emerged as a legitimate wingman to Joe Mixon in a more productive backfield.

Pittsburgh Steelers (7-6) at Indianapolis Colts (7-6): A wildcard intersection might become a postseason off-ramp for the loser of this game depending on how dominoes fall Sunday. The Colts lost for the first time since the end of October last week at Cincinnati and cracks are starting to appear in the run defense. Indianapolis has been hit for at least 125 rushing yards in six of the past seven games. Pittsburgh, what with a backup quarterback and milquetoast offense, is primed to deploy a ground-and-pound approach using a conservative running game to back the Steelers’ stout defense. Indianapolis won’t have top back Jonathan Taylor (thumb) again, but the combination of Gardner Minshew and WR Michael Pittman Jr. has been filthy. Pittman has at least eight receptions in six consecutive games.

Denver Broncos (7-6) at Detroit Lions (9-4): Sean Payton brought the Broncos back from the brink of self-combustion by lending a stronger voice to defensive coordinator Vance Joseph. Denver has a string of eight consecutive games holding opponents to 22 or fewer points with 18 takeaways in the past seven games and 15 sacks in the past three. Lions coach Dan Campbell sees the dashboard warning lights, but believes the easy fix to most of what ails Detroit is the turnover battle. The return of safety CJ Gardner-Johnson should spark the secondary, but more consistent play from QB Jared Goff has been the focus for Campbell and offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. Goff threw two picks and was sacked four times in the Lions’ loss at Chicago last week.

–Sunday games

Atlanta Falcons (6-7) at Carolina Panthers (1-12): Before the Falcons check off their rematch with Carolina as a victory, Atlanta must reassess what led to a tie game into the third quarter of their first matchup. Only a turnover turned the tide for the Falcons, who lost 25-15 at Carolina in 2022 and have one division road win (at Tampa) in the past three seasons. To remain in the playoff race, the Falcons can’t afford a loss. Only the NFC South champion is likely to be in the postseason, and Tampa Bay took control of the South with a win at Atlanta last week. Carolina is long way from January football talk, and the focus next month will be finding a new coach who can help turn around the fortunes of the franchise and rookie QB Bryce Young. Young is 30th, last among qualifiers, with a 70.9 QB rating and tied for 24th in with nine TD passes this season.

Chicago Bears (5-8) at Cleveland Browns (8-5): QB Justin Fields has one interception in his past 129 attempts and at least 45 rushing yards in six starts in a row, bringing the Bears back into the peripheral playoff conversation that gains a massive boost with a win at Cleveland. The Browns are down multiple playmakers, including S Grant Delpit (groin), but a strong running game and the rejuvenation of the passing game behind cannon-armed QB Joe Flacco has given Cleveland new life in the AFC North. A line of teams clawing for the same spot in the wild-card standings awaits. With a Christmas Eve trip to Houston followed by a short week of prep for a Jets team that could have Aaron Rodgers back ratchets up the importance of this Week 15 matchup.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6-7) at Green Bay Packers (6-7): Tampa Bay took a step forward and owns first place in a three-way tie in the NFC South standings, looking to stretch its winning streak to three games and deal the Packers’ playoff chances a blow in the process. Green Bay feels the same way entering a game that could have wild-card tiebreaker implications. The Packers won three games in a row before losing 24-22 to Tommy DeVito and the New York Giants on Monday night. Packers QB Jordan Love, 25, has been a big reason for the Packers’ recent optimism. In the past four games, he has passed for 1,075 yards, nine touchdowns and one interception while posting an impressive 106.2 passer rating.

New York Jets (5-8) at Miami Dolphins (9-4): The Jets will hear nothing of injury woes out of the first-place Dolphins, who could be without WR Tyreek Hill (ankle) and others on Sunday. The Jets won’t have their QB1 — yet — but Aaron Rodgers is pushing to return this month from an Achilles injury if the Jets are still in the playoff picture. That largely depends on the play of Zach Wilson. He didn’t play in New York’s 34-13 loss to the visiting Dolphins on Nov. 24. The Dolphins suffered a searing 28-27 setback to Tennessee on Monday in which they allowed 15 points in a 51-second span in the fourth quarter. The high-powered Miami offense that ranks No. 1 in total offense (423.6 yards per game) and No. 2 in scoring (31.6 points per game) was severely hampered with Hill (league-high 1,542 receiving yards) hobbled. Miami QB Tua Tagovailoa was sacked a season-worst five times while completing 23 of 33 passes for 240 yards. “It’s the NFL, anything can happen,” said Tagovailoa, who leads the NFL with 3,697 passing yards. “We got to do a better job finishing the game with the time we had, while we had the ball.” Miami has won 10 of the past 12 meetings.

New York Giants (5-8) at New Orleans Saints (6-7): The New York Giants have won three games in a row, and the Saints have lost three of four games. The Giants have a path to the wild card, while the Saints can still win the NFC South. The final margin has been eight points or less in eight of New Orleans’ games this season. Six of the Giants’ losses have been by 15 or more points, but rookie quarterback Tommy DeVito has given the team a lift during his four starts. Wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson said DeVito’s happy-go-lucky demeanor in the locker room masks “a stone-cold killer” on the field. An undrafted rookie, DeVito completed 17 of 21 passes for 158 yards and a touchdown in Monday’s win vs. the Packers. He has not thrown an interception in his last 87 passes, and he was not sacked by Green Bay after being sacked 26 times in the previous four games.

Houston Texans (7-6) at Tennessee Titans (5-8): C.J. Stroud couldn’t get back to the field from a concussion that knocked him out of last week’s loss to the Jets, which means Davis Mills gets the call for Houston in a must-win matchup. The Texans are in a tight race in the AFC South with the Jaguars (8-5) and Colts (7-6), who play Saturday. But Stroud is one of several key players not available in Week 15, including WR Nico Collins and pass rusher Will Anderson Jr. The Titans are on a high after Monday’s rally and win at Miami, 28-27, and trying to sneak back into the South division title race. Mills has 26 career starts for the Texans, but is 5-20-1.

Kansas City Chiefs (8-5) at New England Patriots (3-10): Testy following a fourth loss in six weeks, the Chiefs are taking nothing for granted these days. Kansas City is coming off a heartbreaking 20-17 setback against the Buffalo Bills and leads the Broncos by just one game in the division. Head coach Andy Reid proclaimed a rosy outlook for KC with the team in control of its postseason path. For the first time in weeks, the Patriots have reason to be optimistic, too. New England ended a five-game skid with a 21-18 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Dec. 7. Bailey Zappe shined in his fourth career NFL start, throwing for three touchdowns in the first half, and the Patriots’ defense took care of the rest. Zappe provided a much-needed spark to a New England offense that had scored a total of 13 points over the previous three games. The contest will mark the first time in league history that opposing coaches both have 250-plus career wins. The total of 556 victories for Bill Belichick (301) and Reid (255) will top the 496 total for the Miami Dolphins’ Don Shula and the Dallas Cowboys’ Tom Landry on Nov. 22, 1987.

San Francisco 49ers (10-3) at Arizona Cardinals (3-10): Cardinals QB Kyler Murray is dealing with a thumb injury but determined to prove the Cardinals’ trust in him is warranted. The 49ers are the first team to clinch a playoff spot and bring a five-game winning streak during which they have outscored opponents 162-65 to Arizona for QB Brock Purdy’s homecoming game. Purdy is from Gilbert, Ariz., about 40 miles from State Farm Stadium. Well beyond proving-ground stages, Purdy deflected talk about NFL MVP buzz this week. “I’m trying to do what I can for this team, for this Sunday, and for this practice or this meeting. I’m not getting caught up in awards and stuff like that,” he said. “If anything, I look at it more as a team award. I have a great surrounding cast. I’ve got guys around me that are all making plays, a great defense, great special teams. And so that’s a testament to the team that I have.” With wins by 23 points over the Philadelphia Eagles and by 32 over the Dallas Cowboys (both also are 10-3), the 49ers will earn the only first-round bye in the NFC if they win out.

Washington Commanders (4-9) at Los Angeles Rams (6-7): An overtime loss at Baltimore on a walkoff punt return put a dent in the Rams’ playoff push thanks in large part to a previous loss to the Green Bay Packers (6-7) that might haunt them down the stretch. The Rams have a schedule conducive to making a playoff push. Their next three games — Washington, New Orleans, New York Giants — are all against losing teams. Only a season-ending trip to San Francisco could be described as daunting, and the 49ers might be resting players that day, depending on their playoff positioning. The Rams’ offense is certainly playing at a postseason level, scoring 104 points in the last three games. They had 410 yards and 31 points last week in Baltimore as Matthew Stafford threw for 294 yards and three scores while Kyren Williams rushed for 114 yards on 25 carries. Washington coach Ron Rivera, whose job status appears to be in jeopardy even if the team finishes strongly, is stressing the need for a more complete performance on the road. QB Sam Howell had done an admirable job keeping the Commanders in games, but has just one touchdown in his past three outings.

Dallas Cowboys (10-3) at Buffalo Bills (7-6): Winners of five in a row, the Cowboys moved into a tie atop the NFC East with the Eagles after posting a 33-13 victory over Philadelphia last Sunday. Dallas averaged a robust 40.2 points a game during its winning streak, and the Cowboys can clinch a playoff berth this Sunday with a win or Glucoslim tie or one of 13 other scenarios. The Bills recorded a statement victory of their own last weekend with a 20-17 decision over the Kansas City Chiefs. Dak Prescott is at the controls of Dallas’ No. 1 scoring offense (32.4 points per game). He has thrown multiple touchdown passes in each of his last seven games to boost his NFL-leading total to 28 this season. Star wideout CeeDee Lamb has reeled in one scoring strike in five consecutive contests. He ranks third in the NFL in catches (96) and in receiving yards (1,253). Cowboys OLB Micah Parsons has 12.5 sacks for the season, and the Cowboys’ fourth-ranked scoring defense (17.9 points a game) is a prime concern for Bills quarterback Josh Allen, who has been sacked just 18 times. Allen, who is tied for second in the NFL with 25 touchdown passes, guides the Bills’ fifth-ranked scoring offense (26.8 points per game).

Baltimore Ravens (10-3) at Jacksonville Jaguars (8-5): Lamar Jackson said he’s more interested in a run for the Lombardi Trophy than MVP, and his top-seeded AFC team can take a big step in that direction when the Ravens visit the Jaguars. Baltimore has a one-game lead over the Dolphins at the top of the conference. There are nine scenarios in which the Ravens can clinch a playoff spot Sunday should they defeat the Jaguars. Jackson was NFL MVP in 2019 and appreciates the praise for his 2023 individual season, which includes 2,934 passing yards and 16 touchdown throws. He also has 644 yards and five scores on the ground. But Baltimore hasn’t won a playoff game since the 2020 season, and Jackson is focused on changing that. “It’s an honor just being acknowledged — to be in the conversation with great guys,” he said. “But I’m just trying to stay locked in trying to win, because I want (the Lombardi) trophy.” Jackson is coming off a superb performance in which he passed for 316 yards and three touchdowns and tacked on 70 rushing yards in last week’s 37-31 overtime home win over the Los Angeles Rams.

–Monday game

Philadelphia Eagles (10-3) at Seattle Seahawks (6-7): Despite back-to-back losses, the Eagles are still tied for first place in the NFC East and in contention for the conference’s top playoff seed. With four consecutive defeats, the Seahawks have gone from atop the NFC West to needing to make up ground for a wild-card playoff berth. The schedule over the past month has been difficult for both teams. The Eagles defeated Kansas City and Buffalo, then lost to San Francisco and Dallas, allowing the host Cowboys to pull into a first-place tie in the division with a 33-13 victory last Sunday night. The Eagles have games against Seattle and Arizona (3-10) and two against the New York Giants (5-8) remaining. The Seahawks have lost twice in the past three weeks to the division-leading 49ers, including 28-16 last Sunday in Santa Clara, Calif., as Drew Lock started in place of injured quarterback Geno Smith (groin). Seattle’s skid is its longest since Pete Carroll took over as coach in 2010.

Week 11 NFL Capsules

Pittsburgh Steelers (6-3) at Cleveland Browns (6-3): In pursuit of AFC North-leading Baltimore, already a Week 11 winner, the Browns and Steelers are leading with defense. That’s especially true with Cleveland turning to rookie QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson. Deshaun Watson (shoulder) is out for the season after being injured last week. DTR is an electric athlete who makes his second start under better circumstances than the first, a 28-3 loss at Baltimore. He learned less than three hours before kickoff against the Ravens that he’d be the first-team QB, and threw three INTs while being sacked four times. Cleveland’s defense is built to be a great asset to any quarterback. The Browns are getting their second look at Kenny Pickett and the Steelers, who won the Week 2 matchup 26-22. T.J. Watt’s 16-yard fumble return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter was the difference. Each team has won four of its past five games.

Chicago Bears (3-7) at Detroit Lions (7-2): The Lions play five of their final eight games against their three NFC North rivals, beginning with a home matchup against the last-place Bears on Sunday. The Lions are seeking their first division title since 1993, back when it was known as the Central division and included the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. “If you aspire to win a division, you have to win your division games,” Detroit coach Dan Campbell said. “That’s the bottom line here.” The Lions hold a 1 1/2-game advantage over Minnesota, which has won five straight games. They’ll play the Vikings twice in the last three games of the season. Detroit’s task against Chicago might be a little more difficult with the return of QB Justin Fields. He has recovered from a right thumb injury that cost him four games. Detroit’s offensive playmakers piled up big numbers in the 41-38 thriller over the Chargers last week. QB Jared Goff threw for 333 yards and two touchdowns. Amor-Ra St. Brown caught eight of those passes for 156 yards and a score. The 1-2 backfield punch of former Bears starter David Montgomery and rookie Jahmyr Gibbs combined for 193 yards and three touchdowns.

Los Angeles Chargers (4-5) at Green Bay Packers (3-6): Los Angeles is optimistic the playoffs are possible despite losing three of its past five games. The Chargers are coming off a 41-38 setback on a last-second field goal to the Lions. Chargers QB Justin Herbert said he and his teammates remain confident. The team scored a season high in points last week, however it also surrendered a season high in points. To catch Patrick Mahomes and Kansas City, the Chargers must slow down Packers quarterback Jordan Love. He passed for 289 yards and two touchdowns, and rookie wide receiver Jayden Reed hauled in five catches for 84 yards and a score for his best performance of the season. The Packers have a 10-2 advantage in the all-time series. Winning close games isn’t Green Bay’s forte this season and the Packers gave up a second-half lead and lost 23-19 to the Steelers last week. Of six defeats this season, four were one-score games they fumbled on the road: at Atlanta (25-24), at Las Vegas (17-13), at Denver (19-17) and last week.

Las Vegas Raiders (5-5) at Miami Dolphins (6-3): The Raiders are 2-0 since firing Josh McDaniels and handing the keys to Antonio Pierce, who has quickly energized the squad. The visit to Miami is the only road contest during a six-game stretch for the Raiders. “We were fortunate that my first two games were at home,” Pierce said of the shift since he replaced McDaniels. “Now we are on the road. It’s good to go through adversity. (Miami) is a good football team.” Miami leads the AFC East by 1 1/2 games over the Buffalo Bills and has outscored opponents by averaging 31.7 points per game. The Raiders average 17.2 points this season. Rookie speedster RB De’Von Achane had seven touchdowns before missing the past four games and could be ready to return from a knee injury. Miami dropped two of its past three games, but the setbacks were to last season’s Super Bowl teams (Chiefs and Eagles). Raiders RB Josh Jacobs is rejuvenated under new leadership. He rushed for a then-season-best 98 yards and two touchdowns in a 30-6 win over the Giants in Pierce’s coaching debut and another season high with 116 yards in last Sunday’s 16-12 win over the Jets.

New York Giants (2-8) at Washington Commanders (4-6): Rookie Tommy DeVito gets the call again for the Giants and he draws the Commanders’ defense, which allowed Seattle to score on its final three possessions in a 29-26 loss last week after blowing a late lead against the Eagles prior to that. The Commanders went from No. 3 in yards allowed in 2022 to the fourth-worst entering Week 11. New York has lost seven of its last eight with the lone win coming at home over Washington, 14-7, on Oct. 22. Despite that defeat, the Commanders are a double-digit favorite for the first time since 2017. Health woes continue to haunt the Giants, who are depending on RB Saquon Barkley to move the chains and keep the offense in the game. Playing behind a patchwork offensive line, DeVito has been sacked 11 times the last two weeks. Washington’s offense is a bright spot and the Commanders are closer than ever to being convinced QB Sam Howell is the franchise passer they’ve coveted for years.

Dallas Cowboys (6-3) at Carolina Panthers (1-8): If an ideal time for 2021 first-round CB Jaycee Horn’s return from injury existed, this might be that spot. The Cowboys are the lone team in the NFL this season that has reached the 40-point level in three different games. “This past month, we’re hitting on all cylinders,” Dallas coach Mike McCarthy said. While Horn (hamstring) coming back from IR isn’t certain, the Panthers do expect pass rusher Brian Burns in the lineup on Sunday. But Dak Prescott could be hitting another level. He threw for 404 yards last weekend against the New York Giants, giving him three consecutive games above the 300-yard mark. WRs CeeDee Lamb and Brandin Cooks both eclipsed the 150-yard receiving mark last week, and the Cowboys ran for 168 yards. Lamb is the first player in NFL history with three straight games of double-figure catches and 150-plus receiving yards. The Panthers called a reverse at play-caller this week. Head coach Frank Reich will return to calling plays after handing those duties to Thomas Brown last month.

Tennessee Titans (3-6) at Jacksonville Jaguars (6-3): Jacksonville’s five-game winning streak come to a halt with a 34-3 dismantling by the San Francisco 49ers last week. Jacksonville surrendered three passing touchdowns to Brock Purdy, while Jaguars’ QB Trevor Lawrence tossed a pair of interceptions and was sacked five times. While head coach Doug Pederson said he’s sure the team will “bounce back,” he also admitted Lawrence (knee) isn’t healthy. The loss to the 49ers marked the first multi-interception game of the season for Lawrence, who has been picked off six times while throwing nine touchdowns through nine games. He’s completed 67.3 percent of his passes this season 2,120 yards. The Titans lost back-to-back road games to the Steelers and Buccaneers, spinning their tires in the running game. Derrick Henry and Tyjae Spears combined for just 42 rushing yards last week. Rookie Will Levis, in his third start, completed just 19 of 39 passes for 199 yards and an interception. The Titans seem to be getting a bit healthier ahead of their first meeting of the season with the Jaguars, who won the winner-take-all regular-season finale in 2022.

Arizona Cardinals (2-8) at Houston Texans (5-4): Above-.500 in November for the first time since 2019, there’s an unrecognizable element in the air in Houston: playoff talk. QB C.J. Stroud has the Texans squarely in the postseason conversation with eight games to play, Glucoslim but head coach DeMeco Ryans said the challenge is to focus on the game in front of them. Up next is a critical fight with the division-leading Jacksonville Jaguars (6-3) on Nov. 26 on the Texans’ home turf. Stroud leads the NFL with 291.8 passing yards per game and is sixth with a 101.0 rating. He is the linchpin of an offense scoring 24.1 points per game — 10th in the league — and averaging 372.5 yards per game, good enough for sixth. Arizona is better equipped to put up points in Kyler Murray’s second game back from his 2022 ACL injury. The Cardinals rank 31st in opponent quarterback rating (101.0) and 29th with an opponent completion percentage of 69.1. The statistics point to Stroud rolling again, especially if his offensive line continues to sweep a pristine pocket clear of obstacles. Houston allowed one sack over 41 dropbacks in a 30-27 road victory over the Cincinnati Bengals last week. Of importance in that mission, left tackle Laremy Tunsil (knee) has been fighting to practice.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-5) at San Francisco 49ers (6-3): A rematch of the 49ers’ 35-7 win in the same stadium last December pits a pair of teams that snapped losing streaks last week. The Bucs halted a four-game losing skid with a 20-6 triumph over the visiting Tennessee Titans last Sunday. The Buccaneers now find themselves a half-game behind the New Orleans Saints for first place in the mediocre-at-best NFC South. San Francisco, which also played last week’s game in the state of Florida, ended a three-game slide with a 34-3 rout of the Jacksonville Jaguars. The 49ers remain tied with the Seattle Seahawks atop the NFC West. The Buccaneers have a tall order ahead in San Francisco, which ranks tied for third in the NFL in points scored per game (28.0) and tied for second in points allowed (15.9). The trade deadline addition of DE Chase Young produced some scary flashes of dominance last week. Christian McCaffrey, who has made himself at home in the end zone of late, saw his streak of consecutive games with a touchdown come to an end at 17 games (including playoffs). But he scored three TDs in the win over Tampa Bay last season.

New York Jets (4-5) at Buffalo Bills (5-5): Too early to be dubbed an elimination game, but peering ahead at the remaining schedule for both teams might make one wonder. Status quo wasn’t working for the Bills, who fired offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey following a 24-22 loss at home to the Broncos that featured four turnovers and a pair of last-minute penalties that set up Denver’s game-winning field goal. The Bills can’t afford to stall out, already 1 1/2 games behind Miami in the division and currently behind the wild-card teams in the AFC. The next five weeks bring games at Philadelphia (8-1), the bye week, at Kansas City (7-2), versus Dallas (6-3) and at the Los Angeles Chargers (4-5). Curbing turnovers — Josh Allen has 15 this season — becomes the task of new coordinator Joe Brady. Jets head coach Robert Saleh’s defense has clamped down on Allen the way few teams have in recent years. It forced four turnovers in Week 1 (three interceptions, one fumble), but New York’s offense has gone 36 possessions without a TD.

Seattle Seahawks (6-3) at Los Angeles Rams (3-6): The Rams are coming off a bye and QB Matthew Stafford is expected to return to the starting lineup after missing one game with a sprained ligament in the thumb on his throwing hand. The Rams won the first meeting between NFC West rivals, outscoring Seattle 23-0 in the second half in Week 1 to win 30-13. The Seahawks are tied atop the division with the 49ers and hoping for more consistent play from QB Geno Smith. Smith was 9 of 11 on the final two drives against Washington last week but could be without WR Tyler Lockett (hamstring) this week. The Rams have lost three consecutive games. Stafford returns for the Rams after missing a 20-3 loss at Green Bay on Nov. 5, but rookie WR Puka Nacua (knee) might miss his chance for an encore against Seattle. Nacua had 10 catches for 119 yards in the September matchup.

Minnesota Vikings (6-4) at Denver Broncos (4-5): In the primetime spotlight for the second consecutive week, the Broncos might warrant a little attention thanks to a three-game winning streak including a win over the Chiefs and a pair of two-point wins (Bills, Packers). Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell might be thinking “hold my beer, Sean Payton” as he heads to the Rockies with a five-game winning streak while overcoming the loss of key players including quarterback Kirk Cousins and wide receiver Justin Jefferson (hamstring). The Vikings beat the New Orleans Saints (27-19) last Sunday and could get a big boost with Jefferson back from injured reserve. QB Joshua Dobbs, acquired from the Cardinals to replace Cousins, won his first start with the Vikings last week after leading a late rally the week prior at Atlanta. The anticipated Sean Payton Effect might be showing through in Russell Wilson’s performance. His 104 passer rating is significantly higher than the 84.4 clip a season ago. Wilson has completed 67.9 percent of his passes for 1,806 yards, 18 touchdowns and four interceptions. The Broncos’ running game, another Payton staple, is picking up the pace in the second half of the season. Javonte Williams has led the way with 436 rushing yards to go along with 109 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

Philadelphia Eagles (8-1) at Kansas City Chiefs (7-2): Whether dubbed Super Bowl 57.5 or the Kelce Clan Reunion, there’s been nothing swift about the success of the teams that battled for the Lombardi Trophy in February. The Eagles have the NFL’s best record. The Chiefs lead the AFC and swept the last four meetings with the Eagles, including 38-35 in Super Bowl LVII on Feb. 12. Chiefs coach Andy Reid is the winningest head coach in the history of both franchises, logging 140 victories (including playoffs) for the Eagles from 1999-2012 and 136 since taking over the Chiefs in 2013. Nine months ago in Glendale, Ariz., it was all about QBs. Patrick Mahomes, playing on an injured ankle, threw two of his three touchdown passes in the fourth quarter and set up the winning field goal with a gutsy 26-yard scramble. He won his second Super Bowl MVP award. Jalen Hurts was just as effective. He completed 27 of 38 passes for 304 yards and a touchdown and rushed 70 yards for three touchdowns. He used his legs to pick up the game-tying score — and the two-point conversion — with 5:15 remaining. Both are in the MVP conversation again in 2023. Hurts has completed a career-high 68.9 percent of his passes for 2,347 yards with 15 touchdowns but also eight interceptions. He has seven rushing TDs.
