A couple of years back I had what seemed like an engine fire when the bendix on the starter motor failed to disengage from the fly wheel and with the engine running the starter motor became a second alternator and overheated producing clouds of smoke. A marine engineer advised that starter motors should be taken off engines annually and the lubrication checked to ensure that the bendix worked properly.
I had somehow missed my turn coming out of Cortez, CO, and instead of passing by the Four Corners monument I found myself headed due south to Shiprock, NM, and Gallup. That added about 50 miles to my day’s ride but by the time I figured it out it wouldn’t have saved me anything to go back, so I pressed on. Made a quick stop in Gallup for gas and then jumped on I-40 headed west.

Then in Goodwood’s Easter Monday race Behra experienced a brake failure and drove into a concrete wall. He narrowly escaped being pitched out of the car and although injured he was able to walk away.
Both of these parts are pretty expensive, and you might not get the best price on them from your friendly neighborhood mechanic. If you ever need a replacement of these parts, it’s best to look a little harder to save money.
